2019'sJoker was a phenomenal success at the box office, so it was only a matter of time before a sequel was announced, and director Todd Phillips just revealed the completed script and Joaquin Phoenix's return. And though many think a sequel is unnecessary and that the first film was a perfect standalone movie, there are so many different avenues Joker: Folie á Deux could go down.

However, other Redditors have gotten imaginative when revealing their hopes for the sequel. Between tying into a larger universe and referencing viral memes, some of the users' demands are fascinating, and there are a couple of level-headed ideas too.

Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck in Joker

At the end of Joker, right before the final scene when Arthur kills the doctor in Arkham Asylum, there's a whole army of Jokers influenced by the failed comedian. Arthur is even treated like a king by the rioters, being hoisted up onto the top of an abandoned GCPD vehicle, which led to speculation that those copycats would be Arthur's minions in a sequel.

However, AwfulMurray has a different idea, hoping, "a second Joker emerges and gains more popularity and Arthur becomes consumed with envy seeing him take his spotlight." The Redditor continues, explaining that it'd be the beginning of a downward spiral for Arthur. This narrative would make sense given the sequel's subtitle,Folie á Deux, which translates to "madness for two."

It Ties Into The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger as The Joker sitting in a cell in The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight trilogy is one of the greatest movie series of all time, but it stands on its own and isn't tied to any overarching universe. Even with Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman in the upcoming The Flash, Christian Bale and his series of films have been left well alone.

However, a deleted user wants Joker and its upcoming sequel to precede the events of Batman Begins. The Redditor thinks audiences should see the death of Arthur Fleck and adds that Heath Ledger's Joker "could have been the one who killed Phoenix's Joker." While it's an interesting concept, fans want a Dark Knight fourquel more than anything, as it could follow John Blake taking up the mantle of the Caped Crusader.

Joaquin Phoenix Goes Full-Joker

Arthur Fleck was a unique take on the iconic character, and instead of being a criminal mastermind full of ingenious and chaotic ideas, Arthur isn't all that smart and is more instinctual than the Joker has ever been. And while it was great to see an original portrayal of a character that has been all over movies, TV, and video games for decades, JediJones77 thinks the sequel should see Fleck properly assume the role of the Joker.

Though Arthur Fleck nailed Joker's outfit, he was missing the just as eccentric personality. And the Redditor explains, "Joaquin's performance was something special, and it would be great to see him go full-Joker." It's hard to see Arthur meticulously running criminal organizations, and that might be Phillips' toughest hurdle with the upcoming sequel.

"I'm The Joker, Baby"

More and more, films are becoming incredibly self-aware, whether it's commenting on the state of superhero movies in Deadpool or cramming in as many fanmade memes as possible in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. And this Reddit user would love to see the same thing happen in Joker 2. The Redditor explains, "I'm hoping this time we'll get to hear his famous line, 'I'm da Jokah, baybee,'" which is referencing a viral Joker meme.

Given that Joker has a much more serious tone than any other comic book movie franchise, it's almost impossible to imagine a reference to the meme in the sequel, even if it does have the Hangover filmmaker in the director's chair. However, it could happen if The LEGO Batman Movie 2 ever enters production.

A Bruce Wayne Cameo

Arthur puts his fingers in Bruce Wayne's mouth in Joker

Redditor StefanMorse wants to see more of Bruce Wayne in the movie. However, the Redditor specifically notes that they don't want it to turn into a Batman movie, but that, "I can see a possibility where Bruce Wayne could still be in the movie as a cameo or have a few scenes."

There was a Bruce Wayne cameo in Joker, but Bruce was much younger and couldn't have been older than 10-years-old. So it's extremely unlikely that Batman will be introduced into the movie unless it's set decades later. However, young Bruce could appear more in the sequel, especially if Arthur is still hung up on the idea that they could possibly be brothers.

Harley Will Help Arthur Escape Arkham

One other possibility that the sequel's subtitle could be hinting at is the introduction of Harley Quinn, which could happen considering that Arthur is locked up at Arkham Asylum, which is where the two first meet. Purplewhiteblack wants to see a specific premise where "they could have Harley in this movie help him escape."

It's hard to imagine the fun-loving sidekick in this serious universe, and it's another huge hurdle Phillips has to jump over, but fans are already casting Harley Quinn. Even though Margot Robbie did such a great job of bringing the character to the big screen in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, a new depiction of the beloved character could be a great addition to the sequel.

More Martin Scorsese Influences

It's been noted by many that Joker was clearly influenced by Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, and Scorsese even almost directed Joker. So it's no surprise that Redditors have made several jokes about the sequel being influenced by other Scorsese-directed classic movies. But KorovaMilk113 seriously considers how one specific movie from the celebrated director's filmography could be beneficial to the sequel.

The user posits, "Actually, doing an After Hours type thing is one of the few ways I could see this working." After Hours is one of Scorsese's criminally overlooked movies, and it's a dark comedy that takes place over 12 hours. The Redditor thinks the sequel should follow Arthur over 12-or-so hours where everything goes wrong. That could work surprisingly well, especially if the film picks up exactly where the first film left off, evading the orderlies of Arkham Asylum.

It Should Be Like One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Rather than being influenced by any Scorsese-directed movie, DarthVaderIsMyWaifu thinks the film should be more like another '70s classic, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. The Redditor has a great elevator pitch, positing, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Arkham edition with Joker rallying the patients against the cruel overseer Professor Strange and you've got gold!"

It'd be a fan's dream come true to see Hugo Strange on the big screen, as he's one of the most iconic Batman villains but has yet to feature in a movie. However, that narrative would take too much screentime away from Arthur, and, after all, it's his story.

It Should Be Based On "Mad Love"

Joker furiously yelling at Harley Quinn in The New Batman Adventures

"Mad Love" is the final episode of Batman: The Animated Series, and it's by far the best Joker-centric episode. It's a perfect example of why the show is looked at as more than just a Sunday morning cartoon and is considered by many fans the best depiction of Batman ever.

Regarding the premise of Joker 2, JJlong5 notes, "Think the obvious thing here would be an adaptation of 'Mad Love.'" The episode focuses on how Joker is ultimately nothing without Harley Quinn, and that she had the energy and the skill that Joker didn't. Joker might have manipulated Harley in "Mad Love," but he paid greatly for it.

Joker Vs. Batman

Batman beats up the Joker in The Dark Knight

Though Bruce Wayne is just a kid in Joker, Atticdoor still wants to see the ultimate showdown between the Caped Crusader and the Clown Prince of Crime. The Redditor gleefully mentions, "I would like to see Joker vs. Batman."

In fairness, while there have been countless appearances from both the hero and villain throughout the years, there hasn't been a satisfying altercation between them since The Dark Knight. Leto's Joker and Ben Affleck's Batman only had an awkward chat for five minutes at the end ofZack Snyder's Justice League. If Joker 2 is set decades later, a showdown could make up for what the DCEU failed to give fans.
